When Cleverness Becomes Infrastructure
The smarter AI becomes, the less willing we should be to outsource the choice of what it serves.
Jeff Bezos once said, “Cleverness is a gift, kindness is a choice.” With AI, cleverness is shifting from an individual gift into infrastructure anyone can call. The smarter the tool becomes, the more important it is not to outsource the choice of what it should serve.
AI conversations are often compressed into two questions: How many people can it replace? How much cost can it remove? Efficiency matters, but it is a means. The better question is whether AI can reduce repetitive work, extend human judgment and creativity, and give more people time, capability, dignity, and freedom.
AI should not be measured by how well it removes humans from the loop, but by how well it helps humans flourish. It can do more for us, but the ends it serves—and who benefits—remain human choices.
